STRATEGIES FOR URGE INCONTINENCE


When you can an urge to go, try to dull the urge by
• Standing or sitting still- don't keep moving
• Hand pressure over perineal region
• Sitting on the edge of a chair, rolled up towel or edge of a bed
• Pulling up and holding your pelvic floor
• Crossing your thighs
• Leaning forward with your back straight while sitting or standing
• Pulling your feet up or curling your toes

Maintain this for 15-20 seconds or until the urge dulls

Once the urge has dulled
• Stand slowly
• Don't rush to the toilet- walk slowly if you still need to go, counting your steps on the way- breathe easily
• Try to take your mind off your bladder by continuing whatever you were doing before or starting a new activity
• Try to build up the time you can hold on for before going to the toilet

Keep in mind that bladder training will take time. Triggers that can lead to minor setbacks can include
• Overcast weather
• Stressful situations
• Being ill (especially a cold)
• Tiredness
• Around menstruation periods

Other tips
• Drink 2L of fluid a day, most of which is water
• Don't go to the toilet ‘just in case'. Defer going when you can
• Do regular pelvic floor exercises
• Eliminate or reduce caffeine
• Walk 30 minutes daily
